REVIEW: Richbit RT 012

The Richbit RT 012 is the first “fat bike” electric bike I’ve reviewed, I guess I might call it an efatbike.  If you want to know a bit more about fat bikes refer to a recent post What is a Fat Tyre Bike.  From what I’ve seen there aren’t that many efatbikes around, but the combination of more weight, more traction and a motor makes sense, essentially you’ve got a low-power trail motorbike.  As with all UK electric bikes maximum assisted speed is 25kph so don’t expect a motorbike, but with the advantages of a fat bike combined with the advantages of an electric bike, these have to be great fun to ride!

So how does the Richbit RT 012 fair?

At £1,238 at present on Amazon this is one of the cheapest electric fat bikes available.  But there aren’t many electric fat bikes available, so if that’s what you’re after then certainly worth a look.  The price tag is lower-mid-range for an electric bike.  So does it stand up against other electric bikes in that range?  Looking at the spec it does.  With a 36V 10a battery and motor, front suspension, and 21 Shimano gears it stands up against other electric Mountain Bikes around the £1000 mark.  I have concerns the motor might be a bit under-powered for heavy off-road use, but without having tried it out, its hard to say.  Are you willing to pay the extra 25% for fat tyres?  Only you can say.  But what I hear from fat tyre riders is they’re more versatile, more fun, and less expensive to maintain than standard mountain bikes.

Something to consider for sure is the weight of the bike at 26kg it’s certainly not lightweight.  If you want an all round bike you can use everywhere then it’s probably not the right bike for you, but if you want some electric fun off road then the Richbit RT 012 could be a good starter bike.  The Richbit RT 012 comes in 3 colours as pictured above.  Other spec is:

I’ve owned my Richbit eFatbike for a month now and put 700+ km on it. I’m enjoying the heck out of it. It’s got so some funny quirks about it but all in all, it is worth every Euro I spent for it.
